Basically I liked the movie whenever Charlie Kaufman went all Charlie Kaufman on us. The rest is just like you said - "you wonder if they forgot at times that they were making a film for an audience." Having said that, there’s something to be said for the way it captures the messiness of life. In that way, it’s more honest than most movies are allowed to be. I liked how it explored mankind's obsession with being "special", creating something of great worth to the world that will live on after we're long gone. I found the ending to be quite sad. but I do think he's better when others direct his writing; he puts too much of himself into it, kinda like Lynch with Inland Empire, you wonder if they forgot at times that they were making a film for an audience. It's pretty amazing (especially once they get to Eden). I was a little shocked to see how degraded its condition had become. Contact is a great movie that for some reason never made it to my archives but I shall go out and round out my SciFi collection in style - many thanks for the heads up.
